Diesel
Diesel fuel is important in the United States as it powers heavy vehicles, machines, and industries.
Diesel fuel is used in:
- Transportation– Diesel engines power trucks, trains, buses, boats, barges and ships that transport most of the products people consume.
- Construction and farming– Diesel fuel powers most of the farm and construction equipment in the United States. Farm tractors enable greater food production and productivity with less fuel.
- Military– The U.S. military uses diesel fuel in tanks and trucks because diesel fuel is less flammable and less explosive than other fuels.
- Power generation– Diesel fuel is used in diesel-engine generators to generate electricity for many industrial facilities, large buildings, institutional facilities, hospitals, and electric utilities.
- Diesel fuel is categorized into three classes based on viscosity and pour point: 1D (#1), 2D (#2), and 4D (#4). Viscosity is the property of a fluid that causes it to resist flow, while pour point is the temperature at which it flows. #4 fuels are typically used in low-speed engines.
- Ultra Low Sulfur Dieselwas developed to reduce harmful emissions from diesel powered engines used on public roadways. Starting with the Clean Air Act in 1990, the EPA mandated sulfur content limits to reduce the impacts diesel engine emissions have on public health and the environment. Since December 2010, all highway diesel fuel in the USA has been ULSD.
- #1 Dieselis often considered a premium fuel, because of its added property benefits. This includes added lubricants that keep engine components from experiencing excessive wear, keeping diesel engines running smoothly for longer periods of #2 Diesel is also known as “standard” diesel fuel and is commonly available in most refueling stations. Creating #2 diesel does not require as much refinement as #1, making it the least costly of the two. #2 diesel also contains more energy density per gallon of fuel, which means diesel engines will get more power from #2 diesel compared to #1 diesel.
- #4 Dieselfuel is a heavy distillate fuel that’s a blend of distillate and residual oil. It’s used in low- and medium-speed diesel engines that primarily operate at a constant speed and load. 4-D diesel fuel is ideal for stationary equipment in factories or agriculture, such as marine operations. It’s not suitable for mobile machinery and vehicles
