Gasoline

Gasoline is the primary fuel used for transportation in the United States, powering cars, motorcycles, light trucks, and boats. In 2022, total gasoline consumption, based on energy content, accounted for about 57% of total energy consumption in the transportation sector and 16% of U.S. total energy consumption, and based on volume, 45% of total petroleum consumption. Light-duty vehicles (cars, sport utility vehicles, and small trucks) account for about 91% of all gasoline consumption in the United States. The United States sells three main grades of gasoline at retail stations based on their Research Octane Number (RON): regular, midgrade, and premium. Regular gas has the lowest octane rating, usually 87, while midgrade is 89–90, and premium is 91–94.
